Summary

BabyNameDex does not ask you to register, log in, or give us your name. We do, however, run third-party analytics and advertising, and those services do collect information about your visit. This page says exactly which ones and what you can do about it.

What we collect ourselves

BabyNameDex is a static site. We do not operate accounts and we do not ask for personal details. Two features store data only in your own browser, using localStorage — your saved favourite names and your name-comparison shortlist. That data never leaves your device and we cannot see it. Clearing your browser storage deletes it.

If you vote for a name, we store a counter for that name so we can show which names are trending. To stop the same visitor voting repeatedly, we also store your IP address against that name for 24 hours, after which it is automatically deleted. That short-lived record is used only for rate limiting — it is never used to profile you, is not linked to any account, and is not shared.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-QF0QLD0TFT) to understand which pages are read and how visitors arrive. Google Analytics sets cookies and collects data including your approximate location, device and browser type, referring page, and the pages you view. We enable IP anonymisation. We do not use Analytics data to identify individual visitors.

Analytics scripts load only after you accept them in the consent banner shown on your first visit. If you decline, or never answer, no analytics script is loaded. Your answer is stored in your browser; clearing this site's storage makes the banner appear again so you can change it. Note that the advertising script described below is separate and is not covered by that banner — use Google's ad settings to control it.

To opt out of Google Analytics everywhere, install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

This site displays advertising through Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising through Google Ad Settings, or via www.aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu. Google's own practices are described in How Google uses information from sites that use our services.

Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device. BabyNameDex itself sets no advertising or tracking cookies; the cookies you may encounter here are set by Google Analytics and Google AdSense as described above. You can control or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking them will not break the site.

Data retention

We do not run a database of visitors and we store no personal data on our own servers. Data collected by Google Analytics and Google AdSense is retained according to Google's own policies, which you can review on Google's site.

Your rights (GDPR / UK GDPR / CCPA)

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or California, you have rights of access, correction, deletion, and objection regarding personal data. Because the data in question is collected and held by Google rather than by us, the fastest route is to exercise those rights directly with Google using the opt-out links above. You may also write to us and we will help where we can.

Children's privacy

This site is written for adults choosing a name for a child. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information through this site, contact us and we will act on it.
